“The key to success is the ability to tolerate repetition.”
What artist in the world wants to hear this? YOU do.
When you learn how to sing consistently,
you become free to sing artistically.
When you get on the stage to perform you want to know that what you hope comes out of your mouth is what actually comes out.
Your ability to reliably sing consistently stems from being an excellent vocal technician. Once you can produce consistent results you will be free to fully tell the story of your song. Then your artistry will shine even more deeply.
Great artists do what all great technicians do: Devise a plan and strategy that all but guarantees excellent results. It is all about the system you implement. The goal of that implementation is to create habits in your technical singing that are so strong you no longer have to think about them. When you repeat a co-ordination within your body over and over, it becomes a habit. It becomes how you “do” it.
To create a deeply engrained habit, you have to repeat that coordination over, and over, and over again. Yes, you have to PRACTICE it.
Your daily habits will pay off. Your body and brain will respond to consistent, mindful practice. You will become consistent in your singing and performing. And then you can fully release your true artistry.
Here’s a video of one of my clients and fellow vocal coaches working on how to sing consistently so that he can sing his songs his way. Notice the quick progress he makes in just these few vocal exercises as he reinforces those habits that bring out the best of his voice.
You’ve heard the saying, “80% of success is showing up.” Showing up for yourself is the most important thing you can do for your success as a singer and artist. Show up every day by reinforcing those habits and systems that will give you the technical skills you need to become unconsciously competent in your singing. Then you’ll be free to let your artistry truly shine.
